The technology

URBNSURF Melbourne runs on Wavegarden Cove — a electro-mechanical system from Aizarnazabal. The Cove uses 46+ independent electro-mechanical modules along one wall. Each module pushes a submerged panel; sequencing the pushes creates a travelling swell that peels down the reef bay. Software controls the panel firing pattern, so a Cove can shift from a mellow Waikiki roller to an overhead barrel between waves.

Opened January 2020 as the first commercial Wavegarden Cove in the Southern Hemisphere. Sits on 2 hectares next to Melbourne Airport. Damon Tudor's team pushed URBNSURF as a training venue for Australian WSL athletes — the Beast Mode setting is a QS-caliber wall and hosted the URBNSURF QS 3000 in its opening year.

Frequently asked about URBNSURF Melbourne

+How much is URBNSURF Melbourne?

Sessions run from AUD $49 (beginner Waikiki with board and wetsuit) up to AUD $125 (pro-caliber Beast Mode). Wetsuit hire is included in every session.

+Can I surf URBNSURF straight from Melbourne airport?

Yes — it's a 5-minute drive from Tullamarine terminals. Board hire, wetsuits and lockers are on-site, so you can land, session, and continue on with just a carry-on.

+How does URBNSURF Melbourne compare to Sydney?

Melbourne opened first (2020) and is airport-adjacent — better for a layover. Sydney (2024) is bigger, has more advanced settings, and is closer to real coastline for a combo trip.

+Is URBNSURF Melbourne good for beginners?

Yes — the Waikiki setting is designed for first-timers, wetsuit and softboard are included, and the school runs group and private lessons daily.

+Can I book a private session?

Full-pool buyouts start around AUD $6,000 for 24 surfers, 1 hour, any wave setting on the menu.

+Do I need my own wetsuit?

No — wetsuits are included with every session, including 3/2 in winter. Bring your own for the perfect fit if you have one.
