Getting there

The Lineup at Wai Kai is at Ewa Beach, Oahu, Hawaii, USA.

The technology

The Lineup at Wai Kai runs on Citywave, a standing wave system from Munich. Citywave pumps a high volume of water over a submerged, shaped ramp in a deep channel. The result is a stationary, steep-faced wave that never ends until the session does. Because the water is deep, surfers ride real shortboards with fins, not the foam boards used on sheet waves, and operators can tune wave height and speed per session.

The Lineup at Wai Kai opened in 2023 at the Wai Kai waterfront development in Ewa Beach, Oahu, about 30 minutes from Waikiki. Its 100-foot wide citywave installation is one of the largest deep-water standing waves in the world, letting surfers ride real shortboards on a continuous wave with Hawaii's surf heritage all around it.
