Surfers Cove runs on Wavegarden Cove, a electro-mechanical system from Aizarnazabal. The Cove uses 46+ independent electro-mechanical modules along one wall. Each module pushes a submerged panel; sequencing the pushes creates a travelling swell that peels down the reef bay. Software controls the panel firing pattern, so a Cove can shift from a mellow Waikiki roller to an overhead barrel between waves.
Backed by a Portuguese consortium and Wavegarden, Surfers Cove broke ground outside Obidos in 2024. The site is set 15 minutes from Peniche's ocean lineups and an hour from Nazare, letting guests split their trip between the Cove and the Atlantic. Bookings are open ahead of a December 2026 opening, with one-hour sessions from EUR 72.50 and 12 to 22 waves included depending on setting.
