The WSL Finals — the one-day, top-five, winner-takes-the-title showdown that decides the world championship — will be held at Surf Abu Dhabi in December 2026, the tour confirmed this week. It's the first time the Finals move outside California since the format debuted at Trestles in 2021, and the first Finals ever held inside a wave pool.
Why Abu Dhabi
Surf Abu Dhabi is a Kelly Slater Wave Co. pool — same hydrofoil-sled technology as Surf Ranch in Lemoore, but scaled up. The pool is 700 meters long, produces 3.4 m faces, and rifles overhead barrels for 50-plus seconds. It's the biggest, longest, most powerful wave any of these athletes have ridden in competition.

What changes for the format
- ~Wave pool = zero weather cancellations. The event runs on a fixed date, not a 12-day waiting period.
- ~Every surfer gets the same wave, same section, same conditions — the purest possible test of the top-5 seeding.
- ~Broadcast slots are locked, meaning a truly global prime-time audience for the first time.
